The plan for this study is to examine how AI is used in CAD design today. The study will map the current tools, the tasks they automate, and the failure modes. It will end with a proposal for how to benchmark AI ability on real CAD work.

What the study covers

  • A survey of AI tools for CAD, such as text-to-3D generation and parametric copilots.
  • A task breakdown of the CAD workflow, from sketch to final drawing.
  • A draft benchmark with metrics for geometry accuracy, editability, and manufacturability.

Notes on method

The work uses FreeCAD for all experiments. FreeCAD is open source, scriptable in Python, and stores models in a documented format. These properties make it a good base for automated evaluation.
